Green Bay Road, Appleton, WI 54911 lenweis@sbcglobal.net 920-733-4790 ==================================================== Catherine Rudin, Wayne, Nebraska, has been folk dancing since 1966, starting in junior high gym class in San Diego and moving on to dance, teach, and sometimes perform with various groups in Wisconsin, Indiana, Illinois, Ohio, Nebraska, and Hawaii. She has lived in Bulgaria (officially studying linguistics, unofficially soaking up music and dance) and made shorter visits to other parts of the Balkans. These days she gets her Balkan fix with the Omaha International Dancers and teaches a 'recreational dance' class (translation: whatever Catherine feels like, from swing to clogging) at Wayne State College in western Nebraska. Michael Kuharski, Madison, Wisconsin Michael started folk dancing 37 years ago in Madison and has been a mainstay teacher and leader of that community since 1970. He speaks Serbo-Croatian, Bulgarian, some Macedonian, a little Romanian, less Albanian, and a smattering of Milwaukee-Talk. He has made 9 trips to the Balkans as well as innumerable journeys to Milwaukee to study the folklore, language and culture of the people (particularly Kosovo Albanians, Macedonians, Bulgarians, and Wauwatosans) as well as to collect dances, music, instruments, costumes, wonderful friends, red scarves, and lots of anecdotes. Michael is Artistic Director and a choreographer of Ensemble Narodno, the main man behind the Folk Ball, a June Camp organizer, and adds energy almost anywhere. He teaches weekly at Madison Folk Dance Unlimited, annually at the Door County Folk Festival, several times a year at Folklore Village, and elsewhere upon invitation. Michael plays accordion, lugs a tupan around, and has transcribed folk songs and dance tunes “by the score.” Nick Bratkovich, Tulsa, Oklahoma Born in Milwaukee, Nick began playing accordion at age 6 and started his first band, Umadija, at 13, performing at Serbian churches and ethnic festivals around the Midwest and Canada. In the 70’s he played with Milwaukee’s famous Orkestra Beograd where he expanded his repertoire to include other Balkan and International music. In the 80’s he performed solo for Serbian and International folk dancers in Texas and still performs with original members of Umadija, now known as the Kumovi Orchestra of Los Angeles.
